About

Susanne Uhl is a stage and costume designer for theatre, opera and film.

She studied stage and costume design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden. While still a student, she gained her first hands-on experience at different theatres and developed her idea of jointly conceiving, designing and realising costumes and stage design as one artistic process.

Her ongoing collaborations with a range of artistic teams have taken her to theatres and festivals throughout Germany, Switzerland, Spain and the Netherlands. At Staatsschauspiel Dresden, she designed costumes for productions including Die heilige Johanna der Schlachthöfe, Der geteilte Himmel, Drei Schwestern and Der Kaufmann von Venedig. At Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin, her work included Woyzeck, Hamlet and Kochen mit Elvis, while at the Nationaltheater Weimar she designed costumes for productions such as Faust and Der Drache. Further engagements have taken her to Residenztheater Munich, Schaubühne Berlin, Schauspielhaus Düsseldorf, Deutsches Schauspielhaus Hamburg and Bühnen Bern.

At Deutsches Theater Berlin, she designed the costumes for productions including Macbeth and Medea Stimmen. She continues to work closely with directors such as Christina Friedrich, Manuel Soubeyrand, Peter Kleinert and Tilmann Köhler.

Music theatre is another important focus of her work. At Oper Frankfurt, she designed costumes for several Handel productions, including Teseo, Radamisto, Xerxes and Bianca e Falliero, as well as for Le vin herbé and Der Traumgörge. At Oper Leipzig, she designed the costumes for Undine. At Staatstheater Braunschweig, she created the costume design for the open-air production of La traviata.

Alongside her theatre work, Susanne Uhl also designed the costumes for the films ZONE and Die Nacht ist dunkel und kälter als der Tag.

She also taught for several years at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin, where she supported students throughout their design and creative working processes.

Susanne Uhl lives in Braunschweig and works as a freelance costume designer for a wide range of theatre and opera companies.
